This old Pennsylvania House buffet had seen better days…the doors were broken, the finish was worn, and I almost gave up on it.
But instead of replacing it, I decided to give it a new life with paint, appliqués, and some affordable gold hardware for a French cottage look.

Supplies I Used
Here’s what I used for the buffet makeover (affiliate links where noted):
- Sherwin-Williams Privilege Green latex paint
- Wood appliqués for drawers, doors, and feet
- Wood Glue
- Gold French provincial hardware
- Gold spray paint for hinges
- Small detail paintbrush (I used one from my kids’ craft kit!)
- Painter’s tape & sanding block
Step 1: Prep & Appliques
I didn’t prime the buffet actually, this was a quick little spruce up using leftover latex paint from our bathroom project, but I did thoroughly scrub and lightly sand the surface.
Next, I repaired the doors with wood glue and clamps.

I added wood appliqués to the drawer corners, the center panels of the cabinets, and along the feet. I also decorated the bottom center of the cabinet. These details instantly added character and a slightly ornate feel.

I also decorated the corners of the doors. These details really added character and a slightly ornate feel.

Step 2: Buffet Makeover: Painting Time
Once dry, I painted the buffet along with the appliques for a seamless, cohesive look.

I used two coats of Privilege Green, which is such a beautiful color. I actually picked it for the bathroom because it was a close hex color match to Farrow Ball French Grey! I think it’s perfect for that soft French cottage look.
Step 3: Hardware & Details
Next, I added gold French provincial hardware from Amazon. The gold didn’t perfectly match the spray painted hinges, so I lightly coated them with a little spray paint to give the gold a more antique, slightly muted finish.

For the tiny crevices and ornate details on the doors, I used a small paintbrush (the one from my kids’ craft kit worked perfectly!).

Step 4: Touch-Ups & Finishing
After all the painting and hardware, I checked for any spots that needed a little extra detail or color adjustment. I love how the appliqués and green paint completely transformed this solid but dated buffet.

I’m thrilled with how this buffet makeover turned out! This sturdy old buffet went from broken and dated to a charming French cottage centerpiece, without replacing it or letting it go to waste. It’s proof that a little paint, some creative appliqués, and affordable hardware can completely transform a piece of furniture!
